Learning to Read

I just attended my own children's Student Led Conferences. They are in grade 1 and 2. Watching them sound out and begin to sight read so many challenging words is amazing. They are almost more excited than me because their world becomes so much bigger as they can read about what is going on around them! That is what we are working on right now in music, reading the notes! At first this seems like a hard task, like learning a new language, but once we get it the world of music can open up for kids and they can use it for the rest of their lives. We have been using boomwackers, xylophones, piano as well as guitars to do this. Hopefully each student will be able to read and play a song of their choice using all of those instruments by the new year. There are also lots of "naming note" links on my teacher page that students can use at home or at school during their free time that will help them to learn how to read notes.
